How adventurous you think you are and how adventurous you really are is definitely tested when you come up against strange, weird or odd foods. I tried eel for the first time this weekend, at restaurant called Umami in San Francisco. I’m not usually squeamish about fish, so was very game and it was delicious. Very fishy taste, but a familiar consistency, not unlike swordfish or chicken so it was easier to adapt to the unusual taste.
But when we’re presented with strange, weird and odd foods, it becomes a test of character to look past what it is and focus on the taste (which can sometimes be vile of course). But a lot of times we can be surprised by something that looks or sounds horrible but actually tastes good.

I’ve always felt out of my depth when it comes to sushi, and luckily I was there with someone who knew their way around a sushi menu and we had a great sampling. But if I was on my own at a sushi restaurant I would probably end up with something much weirder than eel.
Which got me thinking, what’s the strangest food you’ve every eaten and what would you dare your friends to eat? This article of “20 Strange Foods to Try Before you Die” might be a good place to start. Just where does one go to pick up a batch of fried grasshoppers anyway?
