Tasty Snacks from Ecuador

In Quito, Ecuador I dined in the restaurant at the Hotel Mecure Alameda where I was staying and was intrigued by the snack I was served before one of my meals.

The mix of popcorn, banana chips, fried corn kernels and sweet onion was an unusual combination of flavors, both salty and sweet, and definitely crunchy.

I also loved the abundance and variety of enticing fruit displays at outdoor markets and the fresh fruit juices made from naranjilla (“little orange” – my favorite), guanabana (white, sweet and frothy), and the more familiar blackberrymango and papaya.

In Cayambe, my guide, Giovanna, took me to her favorite place to sample the local specialty: “bizcochos,” flaky, melt-in-your-mouth buttery biscuits. Delicious!

With a glass of naranjilla and bizcochos to nibble on, I’m a happy gal!

How about you, Wanderboomers? What exotic foods have you enjoyed in your travels?

Would stinky tofu count as “exotic”? :)

The fruits drinks made from naranjilla look irresistible. I hope to make it to this part of the world some day.

These look delicious!
In Jamaica, where I’m from, I’ve had a soup made with cow’s testicles. They say only men should drink it but women do too. At the moment, I can’t think of anything more exotic that I’ve tried.

I was in Ecuador last year and loved those fruit juices! The fruit and vegetables available there are from all climate zones, because they have them all—from pineapples to strawberries, fresh all year around. The markets are fabulous!

Most exotic thing I’ve eaten, well there have been a few. Memorable was the fertility goat sausage given to me in Kenya after a local farmer worried I had not conceived in a whole year of marriage ;)

The recipe of banana and popcorn is totally different, I never seen this back. and the presentation of fresh fruits is awesome. I do not like to eat fruits but these seems so beautiful and fresh, I want to have them all.
