Each February, there is a certain offbeat celebration you might not have heard of: Women in Horror Month.
This ceremonious occasion spotlights the female writers, directors, producers, performers, artists, and composers who have and continue to shape the horror genre. For the entire month of February, there are dozens of events, which range from library installations in Wichita, Kansas to blood drives nationwide. Here is just a sampling of the cool revelry you might find in a city near you.
Short Film Festival in New Jersey
Female horror film directors have not traditionally had the same name recognition as their male counterparts. But films festivals like the one in Hopatcong, New Jersey are looking to change that. From 3 to 9 p.m. on Valentine’s Day, the Horror Happens Film Showcase will spotlight a dozen short horror films directed by women. And with a roster of up and coming names, this is definitely an event horror film fans won’t want to miss.
Q&A Panel and Offbeat Play in the Baltimore area
Maryland might not be the first place you envision when you think of the horror genre, but don’t underestimate the Old Line State. In the Baltimore suburb of Towson, you can check out a group of diverse female authors as they answer questions about their experience in the publishing field. A red-letter opportunity for any fan of horror literature. If you’d like to take in a show as well, then be sure to check out the stage adaptation of Roger Corman’s Bucket of Blood. With a female director at the helm, this reimagining of the 1950s camp classic is sure to be a groovy ride.
Film Premiere & Art Show in Pittsburgh
In Zombie City, USA, you’ll find a couple more upcoming events that tie-in with Women in Horror Month. First, this weekend, an offbeat art show at The Night Gallery will include twenty-five original works inspired by the women of horror. The preview is on Friday with a full reception on Saturday. Then on February 20th, the famed Hollywood Theater will see the long-awaited premiere of the female-centric horror movie, Razor Days. Too much horror, too little time.
Horror Fundraiser in Melbourne, Australia
Just because Women in Horror Month was founded in America doesn’t mean it’s limited to one country. Among several international events is the Women in Horror fundraiser in Melbourne, which aims to highlight a variety of mediums. From horror bands to unique artists, this will be a truly inclusive good time. And with all funds donated to an area women’s shelter, the event seamlessly blends both the fun and the philanthropic. A must-attend occasion for Melbourne horror fans.
And there’s plenty more horror where that came from! For a complete list of events, please visit the Women in Horror Month website.
Happy haunting, and happy horror!
