This is our busy season here at Weird Wanderings. But while I love traveling to unusual and haunted locales year-round, I prefer to spend October 31st close to home surrounded by family, friends, and haunted décor. But for those of you eager for a change of Samhain scenery, here are the five best places to spend Halloween in America. Don those costumes and prepare for an eerie night.
Anoka, Minnesota
The self-appointed Halloween capital of the world, there’s no place like Anoka on the 31st. Among the first American cities to capitalize on the allure of Halloween, Anoka hosts dozens of events as a lead-up to the big day, including a famed parade, a 5K run, and a Halloween block party. The weather in the North Country might be chilly this time of year, but that only adds to the mood.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Go big or go home. If you’re prepared to fight massive crowds, it might as well be in one of America’s most inveterate party towns. If nothing else, the weather is likely to be rather agreeable for outdoor activities. And with a variety of indoor entertainment as well, including Evil Dead: The Musical, Zombie Burlesque, the Fetish and Fantasy Ball, and countless dark-themed clubs along the Strip, you’ll be able to take full advantage of the 31st and beyond.
New Orleans, Louisiana
The voodoo ambiance alone makes New Orleans among the spookiest cities in America. The French District, a spectral stomping ground year-round, comes alive with haunted history tours, special events, and general revelry. During October, you can also find an Anne Rice-themed conference complete with panels, author signings, and, of course, the Lestat Ball.
Tucson, Arizona
Fall celebrations shouldn’t be confined to one day a year. In Tucson, not only can travelers celebrate Halloween, but they can also revel in Day of the Dead festivities. A Feast with the Dearly Departed is just one of the events that celebrates life while retaining a fun morbid vibe. From the Fall Pumpkin Celebration to a Spooky Prom, Tucson is the perfect Halloween locale for singles, couples, and families alike.
Salem, Massachusetts
The ultimate autumnal American town, Salem, Massachusetts is an inimitable New England gem. Despite its tragic history, this tourism stalwart has managed to bridge the gap between capitalizing on its haunted atmosphere while still respecting the legacy of those who died. The Halloween parking situation is difficult, but if you’re up for the challenge, there’s nowhere on Earth like it. The House of the Seven Gables and the Salem Witch Museum are must-sees.
Happy haunting!
