Wherever you may be in the world to bring in 2013, I put together a handy guide on how to say “Happy New Year” in ten languages. There is no better way to make friends fast when traveling overseas than speak their language, even if it’s just a few heartfelt words.
The second way to make friends fast is by introducing to them a festive Happy New Years cocktail. See champagne cocktail recipe below.
Here is the literal spelling of Happy New Year in each of the ten languages and its phonetic pronunciation:
Arabic سنة سعيدة ( sana sa’eeda)
Chinese (Mandarin) xin nian kuai le! (sing nee-ann koo-why ler)
French Bonne Année (bon a-nay)
German Frohes Neues Jahr / Gutes Neues Jahr (frohes neuyis yar / gutes neu-yis yar)
Hebrew שָׁנָה טוֹבָה (shana tova)
Japanese あけましておめでとうございます (akemashite omedeto gozaimasu)
Spanish Feliz Año Nuevo (feh-liz an-yoh n-way-vo)
Thai สวัสดีปีใหม่ (saa-wat-dii pi-mai)
Turkish Mutlu yıllar (moot-loo yill-lar)
Welsh Blwyddyn Newydd Dda (BLOOdhin NEHwidh dha)
Seelbach Cocktail
I had my first Seelbach in November at Churchill Downs (see photo) in Louisville. Both my friend, Lindsay and I loved it! The Seelbach was named after the Louisville, Kentucky hotel where it was first crafted in 1917. And what a creative alternative to toasting with traditional champagne at midnight! The Seelbach cocktail is a mix of bourbon, champagne, Cointreau and both Angostura and Peychaud’s bitters.
1 oz. bourbon
1/2 oz. Cointreau
7 dashes Angostura bitters
7 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
Champagne
Ice cubes
Tools: mixing glass, barspoon, strainer
Glass: flute
Garnish: lemon twist
Stir ingredients briefly over ice, strain into a chilled flute, top with Champagne and garnish. Recipe by Imbibe.com.
