So we’ve all splurged from time to time at airports on a spendy purchase whether it was a $5 bottle of mini mouthwash out of necessity or a $150 duty-free perfume impulse buy.
But this traveler should win an award for most expensive purchase at an airport to the tune of $17,000. The hefty price wasn’t for a Hermes purse, a designer watch or even a first class ticket around the world – it was for booze.
The buyer traveling from LAX (Los Angeles Airport) to Taipei dropped $17k last week on a Glenfiddich 50 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
Maybe he or she was a rare spirits collector as there are only 6 bottles of this liquid gold available in the US. Or maybe they just had some serious cash scorching holes in their pocket.
Whatever the reason was, the traveler snapped up the $17,000 bottle of semicentennial Whisky before it ever needed dusted. It was unveiled 5 days earlier.
Actually, as crazy as it sounds, this Whisky-lover was a bargain hunter. When the rare Glenfiddich 50 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky was first released, it went for more than double at a Christie’s auction for $38,000.
Another reason why I love spirits – what other industry values aging like the liquor/wine market does?
With the big spender’s purchase, there are now only 5 Glenfiddich 50 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottles remaining… better book a trip asap so you too can get join the exclusive “Most Expensive Airport Purchase” club.
