Happy Lighthouse Day! I’m not certain when my love of lighthouses began, but I’ve adored them for as long as I can remember.
I’ve spent hours looking at lighthouse real estate, with dreams of building an artist retreat inside. I’ve also looked into being a lighthouse keeper, as well as staying in a lighthouse while traveling. I just haven’t had the opportunity to follow any of those paths (yet).
Portland Head Light – Cape Elizabeth, Maine

I have been lucky enough to visit a couple of lighthouses in Maine and one in Texas fairly recently.
Portland Head Light (above) is a quick drive from Portland, in the town of Cape Elizabeth. It’s just beautiful. I could have stayed there for hours. It’s what I imagined a New England lighthouse to look like. I didn’t go inside, but the outside is magical.
Also in Cape Elizabeth, a bit further from Portland, is Two Lights State Park. I didn’t take any photos there, but I did film part of one of my music videos there. I’m standing on its rocky coastline. Some of the most spectacular rocks I’ve ever seen.

At minute 2:56 you can see the rocks at Two Lights State Park.
Living in Texas has me living very far from working lighthouses. During a road trip to South Padre Island, we stopped in Port Isabel to visit the lighthouse and climb to the top. It’s been inactive since 1905.
You can see the edge of Mexico from the top. Just wild, uninhabited land.
Texas has a good list of lighthouses, but many of them are impossible to get to or derelict.

I need more lighthouses in my future. Do you have a favorite lighthouse? Have you ever stayed in one? I’d love to hear all about it in the comment section below!
May your journey be your muse,
Rachel
