I’ve just returned from a trip to visit family in Los Angeles. I thought getting out of Austin in August would be a wonderful escape from the heat. I even rented a small bungalow in Venice Beach to be near the ocean and explore an area I was drawn to the first time I visited Los Angeles in 1995. I have only made the mistake of renting sans air conditioning twice. This would be the second time.

I’m so used to being in the air conditioning that this was initially a huge shock to my system when trying to sleep with the windows open and no breeze whatsoever. Our host was great when I contacted her asking if she had a fan we could use. She went out and bought one so on our second night, we slept better. I struggled the entire week with the heat. When we were walking along the ocean, it was nice and cool – exactly what I’d hoped for. Otherwise, it was just as brutal as Texas, even though it was 10 degrees cooler. Maybe it’s all that concrete?
I’m looking forward to sharing my travel trend forecasts for the area, including brilliant sushi in Venice, vintage in Topanga Canyon, and an unexpected culinary adventure in Beverly Hills.
I shot several rolls of film and can’t wait to see the results! I took six cameras with me. One digital, two medium format cameras, a Lomography Fisheye, an LC-A+, and a GoldenHalf.
