I’ve been visiting Montana this week, and yesterday was a whirlwind tour of Yellowstone National Park. By noon, I was extremely thankful for the beauty that is trail mix.
Having never been partial to raisins, it was always disappointing to me that pre-made trail mixes almost exclusively had raisins in them. So it was a pleasure to find a delicious and revitalizing trail mix by Second Nature at the Yellowstone General Store in the middle of the park.
Dark chocolate and mixed nuts made for the perfect boost after a busy morning of tourist activity. And it sustained us right up until around the time we left Yellowstone, a good six hours later.
Because of my dislike of raisins, when I was in college I would make bulk batches of my own trail mix to take with me on busy class days. I still revert to it occasionally when I need something with me for a busy day and know I won’t have much time to stop.
Obviously trail mix is not hard to make, and you can always substitute for ingredients you prefer, but my favorite was as follows: a combination of equal parts dried cranberries, almonds or walnuts, and white and/or milk chocolate chips. Nuts are healthy, cranberries help with flavor though they don’t add much nutritional value, and the essential part of any trail mix in my opinion is sugar, something to keep your energy up, and chocolate chips are a perfect way to get this.
Do you have a favorite trail mix you make for car trips or hikes?
