When I think of boots, I generally think of something that comes up over the ankle, has a lugged sole, and could be used as your only piece of footwear during the zombie apocalypse. The Hapalua Boot by Olukai has made me revise that somewhat narrow definition. It is an ankle high boot that is both stylish and durable. Made from crushed waxed suede and a lightly waxed full grain leather, it is built more like a rugged moccasin than a boot and it has the comfort to match. The toe box is generous without having a clownish look and the removable contoured footbed proved to be far more supportive than I anticipated.
I’ve been wearing mine around town for about a month and my only complaint is that because of the wide toe box, they feel a little large. I would consider dropping down by half a size, but unfortunately, like many shoe companies, Olukai does not make men’s shoes in a size 7 ½. That being said, these shoes are comfy. They handle rainy days quite well, clean up easily and are as appropriate for raking leaves in your back yard as they are for strolling around town. This is always a plus in my book. I’m a big fan of products that can bridge the multiple activities I might engage in on any given day. While they might not get you through the zombie apocalypse, they’re sure to get you through any activity that does not require a suit and a tie. And let’s be honest, for some of us, the idea of always having to wear a suit and tie is pretty much the same thing as the zombie apocalypse.
The good
- comfortable
- stylish
- well made
- durable
The bad
- wish they came in a 7 ½
Would I recommend them? Yes.
