I’ve always been a fan of flannel shirts (I do live in Seattle after all), but it’s hard to wear one without thinking that I’m somehow trying to ironically reference the early nineties. That’s why I was psyched to check out the new Flanery Heather Shirt by Horny Toad. It has all of the benefits of flannel (comfy, warm, easy to wash) but it comes in two solid colors that make it feel more contemporary. As an added bonus, it is hands down* the softest shirt I’ve ever owned. Like all of Horny Toad’s clothing, it is solidly made out of exceptional and eco friendly fabric (in this case 100% organic cotton). It is lightweight, packs down small and is warm enough to function as a practical layer but stylish enough to be more than an outdoor shirt. The fit is large at first, but after running it through the washer and dryer once, as per their instructions, it shrank to a near perfect fit. I ran mine through a second time to shrink it a little more and that seemed to work well for me. All in all this is a great shirt for the fall or for any time when you want a warm shirt that is so soft it will remind you of the favorite blanket you had as a child. Admit it, you had one.
The good
- warm
- good fit
- incredibly comfy (i.e. – soft)
- well made
The bad
- makes other shirts feel like sandpaper in comparison
Would I recommend it …Yes indeed.

The more you know: In regards to the phrase hands down…wikipedia says “The origin of this colloquialism seems to have its roots in mid-19th century horseracing. When a horse jockey is nearing the finish line far ahead of the competition, “with victory certain”, he could drop his hands, relaxing his hold on the reins, and still win the race.”
