Inspired by the other bloggers who are doing “Photo Friday“, I’m sharing a photo I took on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. This is a great set of ruins you encounter along the final day of hiking into Machu Picchu which is called Winay Wayna.
Many historians feel that this was a special stopping place along the sacred route of the Incas as it’s numerous fountains were fed by a nearby sacred waterfall. It certainly was a breathtaking spot to stop and take in the scenery along with a snack. You can see the Inca Trail snaking along off behind the ruins in the photo, and also can get a sense of the altitude.
In response to the impacts of tourism on this magnificent World Heritage Site, the Peruvian government has imposed restrictions on the Inca Trail in order to minimize the ecological impact. There are only a very limited number of trekking permits available to hike the trail and they are are all first come, first served. That said, it’s worth the extra planning – what a phenomenal hike!
