On the heels of my admission of eating meat during my travels in Peru in Wanderlust & Lipstick’s Wander Tales gallery, I find this post on the jaunted blog, touting Lima as the home of one of the world’s 50 best vegetarian restaurants. While I personally didn’t find Peru to be a haven for herbivores, I am glad to find a new spot to take refuge in next time I am there.
I am by no means a veg-evangelist looking to convert you all to my weed-eating ways, but there is something to be said for leaning towards a more vegetarian diet when traveling. For one, it is often far more sustainable, as produce in most parts of the world is locally-sourced and not imported across long distances. Also, it tends to be a safer choice since many food-bourne illness can originate in poorly processed and handled meat. And in some places such as India and Nepal, eating vegetarian means eating more authentically, since that is what the locals do.
The “Top 50 Veg Restaurants” list got me to thinking (and my tummy to grumbling). What would I nominate?
Top of my list: May Kaidee’s Vegetarian Restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand.
I always stop into May’s little place, tucked in a side alley of the bustling Khao San Road, as soon as I surface in Bangkok. May uses the freshest ingredients and often serves up her delectable Thai treats herself, with a kind smile. While her menu is 100% vegetarian, you certainly don’t have to be one to appreciate the sheer bliss of tasting her food. May offers Thai cooking courses that, regrettably, I have not yet had the chance to take, though I do have one of her cookbooks on my shelf. I simply love supporting this locally-owned, woman-operated restaurant; for me it’s a true oasis within the chaos of Bangkok.
