All smiles at Machu Picchu
After 4 grueling days of trekking on the Inca trail, the first sight of Machu Picchu, nestled on a mountain peak, tucked away neatly into the spine of the surrounding Andes mountain range, is enough to make every hardship and sore muscle worth it.
We reached Machu Picchu early in the morning. The sun was just rising, behind a mist floating away gently from the peak of Huayna Picchu as the impressive and massive Inca stonework structures came into view. Even today, I vividly recall standing at one of the highest points with a birds eye view of Machu Picchu, looking down into the latticework of the stone walls and passageways of houses that made up the city, savoring the magnificent vista before my eyes.
As my sight rested on the superb flawless architecture of the Temple of the Sun, I could almost see the Inca high priest making offerings to the Sun God seeking blessings and life-giving warmth, as laughing children and families went about their day to day life in this great Inca city.
For a moment, I was transported back in time, to the Machu Picchu of the Incas. May it remain as mystical and magical as the first day when Hiram Bingham rediscovered this “Lost City of the Incas”. Now, travelers from all over the world can visit Machu Picchu to rediscover the magic and mystery of this fascinating Incan civilization and their fabulous cities for themselves.
