With summer just a few weeks away, I’m finding myself eager to pull up the calendar and schedule BBQs, picnics, trips to the farmers market, and all sorts of other activities. The season lasts for just a few short months, and there’s so much I want to do and experience while the sun is out. However, the rest of the year is usually so packed that I’ve discovered it’s a good thing to leave room for relaxation and spontaneity during the summer. The trick, though, is making sure I don’t forget the activities I’ve been looking forward to for the rest of the year. That’s where the Summer List comes in. Here’s what’s on my list so far this year:
- Picnics (check out my recent post for some locations and menu ideas)
- Shifting as many household activities as possible to our yard and patio
- My annual search for zucchini blossoms at the farmers market (I use them to recreate a zucchini blossom and anchovy pizza we ate in Rome on our honeymoon–one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had)
- Free Fly Days at the Flying Heritage Collection
- Getting out of the city for wine tasting in Walla Walla
- Day trips to Woodinville for more Washington wine
- Getting to know more about Northwest beer by visiting Seattle breweries and taking a trip to Oregon
- Heading to the beach
- Visiting the new Chihuly Garden and Glass at Seattle Center
- Watching the Blue Angels when they come to town for Seafair in August
- Enjoying all manner of summery cocktails on the porch on sunny afternoons
- Eating lots of fresh produce and salads as meals
- Learning how to grill the perfect steak
- Having friends over for BBQs with ribs, cole slaw, and wine
- Replacing the oven and stove with the outdoor grill whenever possible
- Photo walks through various parts of town
