One year and six days ago, former Flying Salmon blogger Andrea Duchon wrote the following clip in Seattle Food: Weekend Edition:
Calf and Kid opens this Friday in the new Melrose project. I had a chance to talk to the owner, Sheri, the other day and I can’t begin to explain how excited I am about their arrival in my ‘hood. Sheri’s going to be stocking a mix of imported and local cheeses in addition to hosting regular “Meet the Cheesemaker” events. Personally, I’m loving her hilarious cheese descriptions. But I’m not giving away any of her secrets here, you’ll have to visit her for a laugh. Be sure to follow her on Twitter @calfandkid for updates and specials.
Judging from “the insanely white hot reception” that Calf & Kid received during its first year of business, it seems as though many Seattleites agreed with Duchon’s rave reviews. It is my absolute pleasure to congratulate Sheri on the one year anniversary of her artisan cheese shop. I visited her store in February and had the pleasure of speaking with her about her growing business. As foreshadowed by Andrea, you don’t have to meet Sheri to appreciate her playful passion for all things cheesy . One glance at the creative descriptions of her products, and you’ll understand Calf & Kid’s flavor. One particular sign reads: “Sweet, floral, and bathed in beer, like a prom date you’ll never forget.”
Open eleven to seven every day of the week, Sheri has worked hard to market her local and international products. Beyond the rich goodies for sale, the shop also offers a selection of crackers, jams, chocolate and fresh bread from Macrina Bakery. Next time you find yourself in Seattle’s Capitol Hill, hop over to the Melrose Market (between Pike and Pine) to congratulate Sheri on what will mostly be her first of many years in the Seattle cheese scene.
