Years ago I worked at the Pacific Northwest Ballet and, as such, have spent a lot of time in lower Queen Anne. I’ve seen the area undergo a tremendous amount of change: from the demise of one of my favorite grocery stores, Larry’s Market, to the comings and goings of numerous coffee shops to the opening of McCaw Hall.
One of the more recent openings, however, isn’t a new theater or cafe. Rather, it’s The Maxwell Hotel on Roy Street, just a block away from the Seattle Center.
And wouldn’t you know it, I had a chance to stay at The Maxwell during a little Seattle “getaway.”
First, as a former employee of the Seattle arts, I have to say that I’m delighted there’s a hotel in the ‘hood where both out-of-towners and locals can attend a performance and then just walk to their accommodations for the night. And while there are other hotels within walking distance to the Seattle Center, The Maxwell has set itself apart by maximizing on their proximity to so many theaters.
The rooms, hallways and lobby all feature artwork expressing Seattle’s strong music and theater scene. And despite housing a building that you might easily just pass by (i.e. it’s not imposing), rooms are large and well lit.
The night that we stayed, there was a formal discussion/talk about that evening’s opera performance. Guests, many from around the country, were staying at The Maxwell and attending the Seattle Opera. Over wine and hors d’oeuvres, they had a chance to learn about what they’d be experiencing.
But that night wasn’t necessarily “special.” The Maxwell has these sorts of programs regularly. For example… through December 4, 2010, you can purchase a package that includes a performance of The Scarlet Letter at The Intiman and an overnight stay at The Maxwell for just $229. This includes a king or queen room with a view of the Space Needle!
If you’ve been promising yourself a visit (or return visit) to Teatro ZinZanni, this year you can combine your New Year’s Eve celebration, this magical theater performance and a hotel stay. The Maxwell is offering a package for about $450 for you and your beloved.
As a special bonus, each afternoon The Maxwell features a happy hour in the lobby (for guests) with mini cupcakes and coffee! For me, it was a lovely way to be greeted at check in!
