If you’re looking for a getaway but don’t want to travel too far from the Pacific Northwest, consider heading out to Whidbey Island. Located just a short ferry ride from Mukilteo, the island is about 25 miles from Seattle and a couple of hours from Vancouver, B.C. There’s enough to keep a busybody happy but tranquil enough to unwind for a couple of days or more.
One of my favorite places to stay is the Ashingdon Manor (pictured above), a bed and breakfast located in Langley, on the south side of the island. It’s run by a charming young couple, Daniel and Gay Ginder, and their two beautiful young girls. The rooms are comfy (some have fireplaces!) and the breakfast was spectacular.
Venture out on the island and you’ll find lots to do. Coupeville has an interesting main street with lots of shops, restaurants and cafes where you can spend a few hours wandering around. There’s a farmer’s market on Saturdays where you can find some snacks or fresh veggies to bring home. Langley also boasts a number of small shops and cafes where you can grab a bite, a cup of tea or just enjoy a stroll.
But if you want to really see the island, consider partaking in some outdoor adventures such as biking, kayaking, diving or whale watching. You can work up an appetite and then stop by the Greenbank Farm for a homemade pie or visit one of 7 artisan wineries for a bottle or two.
And don’t miss Deception Pass (top photo) at the north end of the island. On a clear day, the views are magnificent from the bridge. Be sure to stop for photo opps!
Where ever your travels take you, ENJOY!
