I was super excited a few months ago when I found a BOGO (buy one get one) offer in a magazine for a spa right down the street from me. I had recently moved into the area and coupled with stress and sore muscles from moving I was desperate for a good massage. I called right away and scheduled my first one hour massage at the Blue Mountain Health and Bodywork located on Corporate circle in Harrisburg, Pa.
Massage #1: Spale Score 4
The office is located at the bottom of the building. I received a great deal on the massages: 2- one hour full body massages for $70. The worker at the front desk was very nice and offered me water. Even afterwards, when I asked if I could switch out my second massage for a service of equal value and they said it would be fine.
It’s true that you get what you pay for, so for the amount of money I spent I had a good massage. Their staff was in scrubs and I found out later that my second masseuse was a full-time nurse who did massages on weekends.
The rooms were nice. They were dark with smooth music playing on the background.
The masseuse wasn’t able to get out my deep knots but then again it was a relaxation massage and not a deep tissue one.
Okay, so that was my first experience at Blue Mountain that I would rate on my Spale (spa scale from 1 (horrible) to 10 (amazing)) a 4. I’ve been to worse but definitely doesn’t even touch the best, which is at a resort in Hawaii.
Massage #2: Spale Score 6
I still went back for my second massage which I wrestled over if I should get another massage or a different service. I was particularly interested in their sinus service. The spa seemed to get a lot of elderly or clients who come for medical issues like sinuses, which I gathered from my observations in the waiting room.
But I still went with the massage. Like I had mentioned earlier, my second masseuse was also a nurse and a guy, which Blue Mountain made sure I was okay with a male masseuse when I made my second appointment.
There were a few surprises on my second massage. The first, I was not expecting it to be a super friendly, large African American. The second, I didn’t have any nasty smells during the massage (so I’m not sure what I smelled during my first visit). And third, he was a really good masseuse! If I did go back I would definitely ask for him! He was able to get a lot of the tension out of my neck and knew exactly where all the pressure points are. He also massaged my face in such a way that it did alleviate some of my sinus pains. Even though he was friendly and would talk when I asked him questions, he knew the line of when to stop talking, which is key in a good masseuse.
This male masseuse redeemed Blue Mountain Spa for me even though I probably won’t go back. I gave him a Spale score of 6.
However, if you are looking for a cheap, relaxing massage I would definitely recommend this male nurse masseuse at Blue Mountain Health and Bodywork. Since my first massage with them I have received multiple postcards and seen ads in Harrisburg’s free clipping magazine for BOGO and other offers. So you will for sure be able to come across a great deal for your massage.
And interestingly enough, a coworker had originally suggested Blue Mountain Health and Bodywork to me so there probably are many great masseuses there that I just haven’t tried. I also haven’t tried every spa in the area so I just might find Blue Mountain to be one of the better spas for my area.
Till next time, folks!
