We’ve all had them. The ones we wished would never end, perma-grin plastered to your face. The ones that seem to create instant friendships. The ones that make you remember why it’s so good to be alive. Those are the best days ever.
Somehow, my “best day ever” count spiked massively when I started skiing in Hokkaido, Japan. As Japan’s most northern prefecture, Hokkaido is a large, isolated island with magical winters. If rumours of epic snowfall, endless night skiing and ultra playful trails have been whispered in your ear then you heard right. With an average annual snowfall of 15 meters, the best way to describe the conditions is consistent. Sure there are dry spells, just like every other place in the world, but at most resorts it’s not uncommon for it to snow for weeks at a time.
Cruising to the top of Niseko for the first run of the day with friends always goes the same way for me: uncontrollable laughter, fidgeting and a tangible sense of anticipation reign. The excitement builds because you just know how good it’s going to be. This is my current “home” mountain— one that I am proud to be based at. This being said, there are so many resorts to be explored in Hokkaido that are equally as good if not better.
To come this month: a whole series on what may be the best ski destinations, if not the most unique ski destinations on the planet.
Winter is coming,
