I was warned a million times. Never bike ride in London. It’s on the other side of the road. The streets are a lot narrower. And I will for sure without a doubt get hit. Like many other pivotal moments in my life, I decided not to listen to anyone. This week in London, I rented a Barclays bike for 2 pounds, and I have to say it was pretty amazing.
Not to downplay bike accidents because I am a regular rider at home, and bike safety is very important to me. I just truly believe that you can be safe, and have an amazing time. It is by far my favourite thing to do to explore a new or old city. You get from sight to sight quickly, and experience the landscape on the way. Plus there is that whole exercise thing that people seem to be really keen on.
It was a beautiful 24 degrees in the afternoon in London, and I went to the first Barclay’s bike rental location by my hotel. Don’t fret if you can’t find one right away, they are literally everywhere. Heading towards Camden Town, I rode through Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill. Both fantastic areas to leisurely ride through. I docked in Camden market, and after a quick whirl around, picked up my next bike and headed to Oxford Street. A couple shopping bags later, I picked up my third set of wheels and biked home. Taking the scenic route all the way back.
When telling this story to friends and family, all I heard was “you must have been so scared the whole time”. NO I was not. As long as you abide by some basic bike laws, it is a great city to cycle around. Stay to the left, and keep off the sidewalks. Keep an eye out for one-way streets, and use your hand signalling. Just be aware all the time and you will do great. If you are renting from the bike share like myself, make sure to return it every 30 mins or you will be paying on top of your deposit. In general I found that cars and buses in London were so used to cyclists that they stayed a distance away.
I have been fortunate enough to visit London many times, but seeing it from a bike, has got to be my favourite so far.
