Well, it’s about that time of year, folks. Bust out the hiking poles, get on the new trail-runners, actually use that heart rate monitor you’ve bought last month. Wait, you don’t have any of that stuff? You’re in luck. Here’s a few of my favorite new outdoor gear items for the outdoorsy, active gal for summer 2014.
The Tempest series is Osprey’s newest women’s specific fit line of backpacks. With six Tempest models ranging in sizes from 6 liters to 40 liters, I found the Tempest 30 L to be perfect for springtime day hiking. This top loading, 1.9 pound pack held all my gear for a long day hike easily, and the women’s specific hip belt and harness adjusted smoothly to fit my body like a glove. Much as I loved the bells and whistles of this bag-removable top pocket, bike light positioning, mesh side and front pockets-the adaptability of the pack to fit well against my body is what puts this pack at the top of my list. Available colors include magenta, grey and green. Price: $129.95 on Amazon
2. Easton AL3 Cork Trekking Poles
These poles are a fantastic choice for those looking for a sturdy, reasonably priced pair of trekking poles. The “rock-lock” system made adjusting the poles to the correct height a breeze. While aluminum is heavier than carbon, these poles still are relatively light, weighing in at 1.2 pounds for the pair. They break down easily to fit on the side of Tempest Osprey pack. Finally, interchangeable summer and winter baskets on the poles enable them to be used during either seasons, making them top choice for year round trekking poles. Price: $79.99 on Easton website
With colors that match springtime conditions, the Suunto M-2 is an excellent all-around fitness watch. Granted, it doesn’t have all the add-ons for an endurance runner or high level triathlon competitor, this watch works very well for your average athlete or outdoor enthusiast. The watch face is easy to read and the features are simple to operate. The heart rate monitor automatically changes between three different heart rate zones to let you track of how hard you’re working out. The lock button key is vital when lifting weights or doing push ups, as it’s easy to hit the side buttons accidentally and stop your workout.

4. Smartwool Women’s PhD Run Capri
I’m obsessed. I love these capris. Running is an excellent activity to do in them, but that’s just one. I also go to yoga class, lounge around the house and even go hiking in them. The merino wool woven in these capris (24% total) allows them to have the key benefits of merino which are less smell, better insulation, and better breathing capability. A small pocket in the center back of the pants let me carry a key and some cash with me when running, though I wouldn’t carry more than that. Small reflective strips on the side of the capris give a bit of visibility for night running, but I would still wear a bright top if taking a late night jog. These have quickly become my go-to capri for outdoor activity and I bet they will be yours too.
