I’ve worn and enjoyed Horny Toad clothes for the last five years or so. I find all their to be uber-comfy, I can stretch and really move in their clothes. Two, they are doing good work with the environment by using organic cotton and recycled fibers in the majority of their clothes. I recently tested out their Flextra Pant and Cloudcover Vest on my trip to Cuba.
The Flextra Pant ($75) is incredibly soft and comfortable. Made of 90% organic cotton and 10% spandex, I found there was ample stretch for movement but the pants still retained their shape after a full day of wear. I wore them when I exercised, when I was on the plane and even when I headed to bed. Not for all the activities at once, but you get the idea. It was too hot to wear these around Cuba during the day, but for a casual autumn stroll paired with the vest (hint, hint) would be ideal.
These pants allow you to shorten the pants to fit your size. The bottom of the legs have banded cuffs, so you can cut at will (below the stiched band)and not worry about fraying. I happen to have short legs, and so I opted to cut them. Sure enough, they look and fit much better. I would add that these pants were too hot for Cuba, and could perhaps be too casual for day wear in Switzerland. If I was planning for a more low key and active trip to a colder climate, these would make the suitcase definitely.
The Cloudcover Vest ($138) is a versatile piece perfect for fall weather. It was too warm for Cuba, but it has been getting its’ wear around New England on these crisp, fall days. When vests have a habit of being bulky, the feminine cut and style that the Cloudcover vest has is a welcoming change. The stitched pattern and lines on the vest create a more defined, flattering look. Big front pockets are important on those chilly October mornings when you wish you brought gloves, and the vest featured roomy pockets for just this practice.
The vest, made of 100% polyester and insulated with Primaloft, has a unique feature that other vests lack; there is a hood. The hood can be turned into a rolled collar snapped closed by a button, but I found I didn’t use the hood very much. My thinking was that if I’m using a hood I really should just be wearing a jacket. Some folks may love this feature, but it just didn’t work for me. The size, weight and ease of packing (packs into its’ pocket!) make this a piece I would take with me to Europe, just not back to Cuba. The price point is a bit high, but it’s a worthy investment if you choose to make this your go-to vest.
