I am only recently an e-book convert, having received a Kindle this past Christmas. I like the feel of a book in my hands, and as the daughter of a founder of a book publishing and editing company, it feels just wrong to not read on paper.
This being said, I love my Kindle for river rafting trips. I have such a selection of books on my Kindle, many more than I would ever bring on the river. But just as I had to worry about my books getting wet, I now have to worry about my Kindle getting wet (and crushed in my bag). Enter the Pelican 1055 HardBack Case.
I tested out the hardcase Pelican ebook case on my last river trip. Pelican, known for their waterproof hardcases mostly used for photography equipment, are introducting this hardcase cover for ebooks. And they are smart for doing so considering that no other kind of waterproof hardcover ebook case is on the market.
The felt-lined ebook case fits 7” tablets and similarly sized ebook readers. I found the lock to be easy to open, taking a bit of force to open it, but that’s understandable considering it’s a watertight seal. The hardback case makes sure my kindle doesn’t get crushed when I toss it into my dry bag and then tightly strap it down to the boat.
The ultimate test came when I decided to gamble to see just how waterproof the case is. I stood from my boat and dropped my ebook (in the locked case) into the water. I’m not frivolous with my things, I did have a backup plan. I had wrapped my kindle in a ziploc just in case it leaked. I picked up the pelican case out of the water, shook it off and opened it. Completely dry. Nicely done, Pelican. If you’re planning to use your ebook in wet conditions, the hardback case is a solid choice to protect your ereader.
You can buy the Pelican 1055CC HardBack case for around $30 here at Amazon.
