Bali is one of my favorite destinations. Over the years I’ve returned for several visits and it never disappoints. Though Bali has changed, it’s spirit and people remain beautiful, serene and welcoming. Each time I visit Bali I return to one of my favorite havens, Ulun Danu Temple. This temple is nestled in the central highlands of Bali, on Lake Bratan, which is one of three lakes in the highlands area. Bedugal where the temple resides is a get away spot for Balinese families.
This temple is in my opinion one of the most beautiful spots on earth. The temple grounds are filled with beautiful flowers, a majestic Banyan tree, a Buddhist statue, a Hindu temple and several small temple buildings on the water, accessable only by those who are part of religious ceremonies. The lake fills the crater of an inactive volcano, Mount Catur.

On my first visit to the Ulun Danu temple the lake was quiet and peaceful, on my next two visits the lake sported a dock where visiters could rent boats and jet ski’s. It was sad for me to see the transformation of this sacred area. The Ulun Danu temple grounds remain a sacred place where visitors are asked to cover their shoulders out of respect for the Balinese worshipping there. You can easily purchase a sarong from vendors nearby and wrap it Bali style to cover shorts or a tank top, which wouldn’t be appropriate on the temple grounds. Visitors will enjoy seeing Balinese ceremonies and beautiful scenery while walking the peaceful grounds.
