The island of Rota
Rota, also known as the peaceful island is a wonderful get away within Micronesia. It is part of the Northern Mariana’s island chain and is located 47 miles north of the island of Guam. This small delightful island is known for its annual San Francisco De Borja Fiesta held each October in honor of Rota’s patron saint. This yearly fiesta is held in the village of Singsong. While on Rota I discovered a warm welcoming attitude among the island residents. As you walk and explore the island you will often find people wave to you as you pass by.
Rota is a natural beauty and has areas for hiking, biking, golfing and scuba diving. It is a quiet island where you will treasure peaceful days. The warm tropical waters allow you to explore a diverse habitat of corals and multicolored tropical fish. My first visit to Rota was a weekend camping adventure to attend the annual San Francisco De Borja Fiesta. This fiesta alone makes the trip to Rota worthwhile. Imagine a fiesta with roasted pig, ribs, red rice, chicken keliguin, pancit, and many other local island treats. It’s the Micronesian version of a Hawaiian Luau for an entire island where visitors are welcomed and made to feel completely at home!
A visit to Rota is both a cultural and religious experience if one attends the fiesta weekend. Visitors have an opportunity to see locals make their way down the streets in a religious procession where islanders honor their catholic faith. A visit to Rota gives you a taste of a simpler style of living as you explore the islands natural beauty and meet its welcoming residents.
Visitors can reach Rota by air on Freedom Air and Cape Air an affiliate of Continental Airlines in Micronesia.
