I had one more night in Chicago before making my getaway to the United Kingdom. The Getaway Hostel in Lincoln Park provided me with a lovely location to prepare for my transition. The building is a gorgeous brick low-rise on a quiet neighborhood street with arched windows and wrought iron details. Their recent remodel was not shy on color or modern furnishings. The hostel offers many communal areas for working, watching television, dining, a large well organized kitchen for cooking and a patio for enjoying an evening outdoors.
I was quite taken with this dispenser in the kitchen. Who needs bubble gum or trinkets when your hot chocolate is delivered in a bubble? If you stroll down the road to Clark Street, you will find a variety of shopping and restaurants. I couldn’t resist a cupcake lunch at the Meatloaf Bakery, they offer a vegetarian and a salmon option, with the real thing for dessert at Molly’s a few doors down. The Getaway Hostel staff organize social and group events to get you out and about experiencing Chicago, ask at the front desk for their schedule.
I stayed in a single room but I was not alone. This gentlemen kept watch over me while I snoozed comfortably. The hostel feels more like a boutique hotel than a hostel. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The Getaway Hostel is a great option if you are traveling solo and on a budget to Chicago. The location is a few blocks from the lake front, the organized events provide safety in numbers when you head out for the night, and the communal areas will have you chatting with other travelers from far and wide.
