Shooting into water reflections is big fun. I’m so sure that you’ll enjoy it that I’ll bet the next time you have a rainy day on vacation you’ll be excited for the opportunity to splash about and shoot into the puddles.
[Reflections of David – Florence, Italy – July 2010]
A copy of Michelangelo’s David stands in the heart of Florence in the Palazzo della Signoria where the original once stood before moving to the Accademia Gallery. This image is a reflection of the statue taken in a puddle on the ground. I love the ripples in the lower right-hand corner and the strange amoeba-like shape in the upper right. I especially like the way his elbow is moving in the ripples – it seems as though he will let loose his sling at any moment.
[Cobblestone Reflections of Roman Buildings – July 2010]
This shot was taken in Rome while on a photo tour with a former National Geographic Photographer. Although I have been playing in rain puddles (splashing and shooting alike) for many years now, my tour guide Tony showed me that it’s ok to make your own puddles too. To create this image, we splashed water from a public fountain down onto the cobblestones. I love the way the buildings create a golden abstraction.
Exercise: Take a water bottle with you on your next walk or hike. Create some puddles and make some pictures. Try tapping your foot to create ripples. Have some fun!
In joy,
Melinda
