Developing a practice of seeing the world in a more deliberate way will make you a better traveler and a better photographer. It will enhance your experience of everyday life because mindful sight makes even your every-day world a more bizarre, more beautiful, and more magical place.

In Rome last summer I caught a glimpse of vibrant green out of the corner of my eye and discovered these lovely tourists snapping sunny images on the steep Roman steps.

The next day, amidst the historic hum of ancient ruins, the precise corner held up by these particular columns caught my interest because of a vague sense of contrast – a sharp dark line against the bright brilliance of the summer sky just above me.
Exercise: Stroll down the street or through a favorite park and focus your mind’s attention on the soft blurriness of your periphery vision. Notice motion, pops of color, and contrast. Stop to explore whatever vague shape, light, or hue intrigues you.
