There is something magical about Mexico and while looking at this view there is no questioning why. Barrancas del Cobre is one of the most spectacular sites in Mexico. The Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre in Spanish) can be reached via “El Chepe”, this train is an engineering wonder taking you through valleys and tunnels with spectacular views and is a major part of the Copper Canyon experience. Not only is this a tourist destination, it is an experience. The total experience should include a horseback riding tour through the canyon to watch the sunset, a stop at the local market to indulge in “gorditos” for lunch, and a trip to the Adventure Park where you can enjoy the canyon through zip lines and ‘Indiana Jones’ style bridges.
The Copper Canyon is located in the state of Chihuahua and can be reached a number of ways. I chose to fly from Tijuana to Los Mochis and was pleasantly surprised by the short flight and ease of traveling from San Diego to the Tijuana airport. From Los Mochis I boarded El Chepe at the train station and headed to the canyon. The views from the only passenger train in Mexico includes mountains, waterfalls, lush landscapes, and homes of the local people. Upon arrival I stayed at the luxury lodge style Posada Mirador Hotel that is built into the side of the canyon. The hotel gives you the ambiance of a lodge in the mountains and the feel of exactly what you want in this kind of environment. The live music and guests dancing around the fireplace in the main room of the hotel was the cherry on top of the experience.
Yes, there is a travel advisory warning against unnecessary travel to the state of Chihuahua in Mexico and as a solo woman traveler I took that into consideration. However, upon my arrival I observed I was not the only gringa, Europeans and Australians were enjoying this experience as well. There is something about Mexico that captures my heart every time I go and the fact that I feel safe wherever I go. Mexico is more than inclusive resorts packed with teenagers on spring break-it is a country full of experiences waiting to be discovered.
