Ever since reading Robinson Crusoe, I’ve wondered what it would be like to explore far-flung islands and experience living as a castaway or something like it.
My fantasies became reality when I discovered Tao, an organization offering adventures to the remote Philippines islands scattered from El Nido to Coron. I signed up for the 5 day, 4 night open expedition on a 72 ft bangka boat. The Aurora was beautiful, had an amazing crew, a kitchen, bathroom, and an upper-deck perfect for sunbathing/taking in the stunning scenery.
On this specific tour, there were 14 of us. While the boat got a little crowded at times (especially the sunbathing area) I met some fabulous people, most-notably the island villagers, whose children deeply touched my spirit. The photo below was taken one day while visiting a small port…when we left the kids waved at us until we were out of sight.
I ate fresh fish and fruit daily, drank the ever-abundant supply of coconut water to my heart’s content, explored hidden caves, snorkeled in clear, turquoise waters (though it took me some time to get the hang of it–Thanks to Markus, my new-found German friend for putting up with my snorkeling ignorance!) ate dinner by the light of torch and the stars above, lazed around on hammocks while gazing out at the sparkling ocean and limestone cliffs, discovered monkeys on a deserted island, explored mangroves, slept in wonderful island huts, showered with buckets of cold water, and realized how much I can live without.
The trip taught me a lot about being true to myself and what I’m capable of. I think the Tao program is genius, commendable, and I’ll never forget the experience.
