Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated in the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. Read more about it here.
For me, this meant time off from work (the NGO is closed for the whole festival) and a chance to roam around the city to take it all in. Kids are off from school, the kolams are colorful and intricate, the cows are dressed up, and the mood is generally positive. Fun!
Here’s a beautiful kolam near my house:
The employees of a nearby clothing store drawing their holiday kolam… and very eager to show it off!
Sugar cane everywhere:
Sampling the sweet pongal dish (at top with spoon)… delicious!
The festival is dedicated to the Sun God. And so, it was incredibly exciting that a solar eclipse passed over India today! I couldn’t photograph it of course, but it was pretty spectacular… the first one I can remember ever seeing.
This post is part of Delicious Baby’s Photo Friday series. Happy Pongal!
