Happy Friday the 13th! Today’s so-called unlucky day is the first of three times the 13th falls on a Friday in 2015. So in honor of this dubious occasion, here are 4 fun things do on Friday the 13th.
Celebrate Blame Someone Else Day
That’s right! Blaming someone else is now an established holiday. It falls on the first Friday the 13th of every year. According to Holiday Insights, this day was founded in 1982 when a Michigan woman overslept on Friday the 13th and then spent the day being late to appointments, all the while blaming her tardiness on everyone else. Weirdly banal origins if ever we’ve heard them and as good a reason as any to attribute a late blog to your trusted cat sidekick. Speaking of cats…
Adopt a black cat
Looking for a new friend, one that won’t borrow your stuff and “forget” to give it back? Then look no further than the long-maligned black cat. At shelters, these noir babies often stay the longest without finding a home. Take this Friday the 13th to find the newest member of your family. Not currently able to adopt an animal? Then kick back with a hot cocoa and classic literature, and read Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat”. Friday the 13th never sounded so cozy.
Watch horror movies
This one’s a given. Obviously a certain Camp Crystal Lake denizen should be the first on your list of required viewing, but any horror movies will be perfect as you celebrate Friday the 13th, the second creepiest holiday (after Halloween, of course). Add in some popcorn and red wine, and this could double as a fun escape-the-cold-weather date. Which leads us to…
Take your date on a romantic drive through a graveyard
Since this Friday the 13th falls so close to Valentine’s Day, why not hit two blackbirds with one stone, and transform Friday the 13th into a romantic celebration? Take a sunset drive among the tombstones and mausoleums, putting into perspective any bad luck you’ve experienced on this bad luck day. A graveyard not your style? Any offbeat setting will do: spooky trails, haunted locales, weird museums. As always, be sure not to trespass (many cemeteries close after dark) and always, always, always respect the grounds. You want these macabre sights to be open for many weird wanderers to come.
Happy haunting, and happy Friday the 13th!
