Happy National Rum Month! Rum is synonymous with summer and the beach. And since it’s summer and National Rum Month, no better time to have in your arsenal a few spiffy (and simple) rum cocktail recipes to whip up for friends. For inspiration, we’re heading to Florida, the mecca of rum culture in the contiguous U.S.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, Hemingway liked his rum cocktails. In the meantime, you can try out his favorite drink at home with the Hemingway Daiquiri recipe and a few other simple rum recipes from some of Florida’s trendy spots in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
Here are a few of rum recipes from some of Miami’s hotspots:
Hemingway Daiquiri
1.5 oz of Bacardi heritage
.5 oz lime
.5 oz maraschino
1 oz of grapefruit juice
Build in a tin, shake over ice garnish with a line wheel.

Regent Cocktail Club’s Piña Colada
1 oz. unsweetened coconut milk
1 oz coconut cream
1 oz Spiced Rum
1 oz aged Rum
4 pineapple chunks about twice the size of dice
Build directly in the blender. Add 2 cups of crushed ice and blend for 40 seconds!

Honey Bee
2 oz Mount Gay Barrel Rum
½ OZ fresh lemon juice
½ OZ Honey Syrup (50:50 honey & water)
½ OZ Agave Syrup
In cocktail shaker, add all ingredients minus champagne. Shake with ice. Pour into martini glass. Top with champagne or sparkling wine.

Strawberry Mojito
2 medium strawberries
3 lime wedges
1 tsp sugar
5 mint leaves
Muddle lime, strawberries, sugar and mint leaves in glass.
Add ice and…
2 oz. Bacardi Rum Lemon
Splash of Soda
Splash of Sweet & Sour mix or lime juice
Stir and serve with strawberry garnish.

Kiwi Menta
6-8 Mint leaves
2 oz Bacardi
1/4 oz Kiwi puree
3/4 oz Simple Syrup
Combine ingredients in wine glass with crushed ice and stir vigorously.
Garnish with kiwi slices and mint spring.

Jamaican Rum Punch
1 oz Appleton Rum VX
½ oz Wray & Nephew
Splash of orange Juice
Splash of pineapple juice
Splash of cranberry juice
Splash of grenadine
Shake, strain into Tom Collins glass w/ ice.
Mojito
12 mint leaves
1/2 lime cut into quarters
½ oz simple syrup
1 ½ oz Bacardi
Splash of soda
Shake, strain into tall glass w/ ice.
