Labor Day is all about relaxing and taking a well-deserved additional day of rest. But if you want to drink well this weekend, impressing your friends and family with your dazzling drink skills, you’re gonna have to work hard for it. You might even sacrifice some flesh or a finger for this festive, end-of-summer Labor Day Weekend Cocktail.
Got your first aid kit handy? Let’s get whacking!
Here’s the recipe, courtesy of Caña Rum Bar, Los Angeles:
Coconut Water & Rum Cocktail
Tools:
Chinese cleaver or any other big scary knife, 1st aid kit, shaker, ice, spoon.
Ingredients:
Cruzan Black Strap Rum, young Thai Coconut
Prep: Make sure your coconuts are well-chilled. If coconut isn’t pre-opened, hack open the coconut by striking it with the cleaver hard enough to go through the outer layer and inner shell.
Do this close to the edge of the top of the coconut so you’ll have a large enough opening to dig into the flesh with spoon. Swing hard, take care to keep all the fingers on your other hand, and have some fun with it. Make sure all your cuts meet.
Once you’ve put 4-6 connecting cuts in the top of the coconut, pry it open with the spoon or cleaver if you wanna look cooler. Now pour the water out.
Measure 4.5 oz into your shaker. Then add 2 oz of rum. Gently shake with ice for 5 secs. You’re just mixing and don’t want much dilution. The coconut water’s already cold. Strain it back into the coconut and now you have a healthy, refreshing intoxicant in a really environmentally friendly vessel that serves two useful purposes: It keeps your drink cold (the shell holds the chill from the fridge for a while) and provides a snack (use the teaspoon to eat the flesh).
Each coconut can provide 2-3 rounds.
Nothing says “life of the party” like drinking outta a coconut.
