The plane touched down at Sea-Tac Airport last night. Today my bags are unpacked, though piles of clothing and laundry still need to be put away. I look outside my window and see evergreens rather than palm trees. I am home.
Memories of the past week and a half in Kauai make me wistful, but I have much to look forward to here in Seattle. There’s something about the experience of returning from vacation that does that to me: I never feel ready to leave, yet upon arriving back home I’m always simultaneously greeted with a sense that everything is just how it should be, that this is where I belong.
Being a native Seattleite, I’ve sometimes wondered what it would be like to pull up my roots and transplant them somewhere else. But I stay. I see the world through travel every chance I get, but I always come home.
So when the women at Wanderlust and Lipstick asked me earlier this month to coauthor The Flying Salmon with Louise Lakier, I was thrilled. The Pacific Northwest–with its lakes, mountains, small towns and big cities–is the best backyard I can imagine, and now I not only get to experience them for myself, but also share them with readers who are looking for travel ideas as well as insights into what makes this corner of the world so special and unique.
I hope you’ll follow along as Louise and I share our experiences here on The Flying Salmon. If there are places or topics you’d like to suggest, please let me know!
