When I think about the great icons of summer, a few things come to mind: the beach, sunburns, ice cream and of course, baseball. In fact, if you talk to my boyfriend, I’d say the decision to rent our new apartment was based mainly on the fact that it’s within walking distance to the stadiums. Knowing that I’ll be at more than my fair share of games this season, I started thinking…I wonder if the food at Safeco is any good? Now, before I go any further, I have to admit, Citi Field (the old Shea Stadium) in NYC spoiled me quite a bit when it comes to big league grub. With New York staples like Shake Shack and Blue Smoke BBQ within the stadium limits, how can you really go wrong? And contrary to popular belief, I wasn’t a Mets fan because I lived in Queens – it was the gluten-free beer readily available at the games that won my heart.
Safeco not only has gluten-free beer, but is also serving up gluten-free halibut and chips! In addition, they’ve joined the ranks of ballparks that have graduated from hog dogs and pizza to more impressive plates. Some options include Dungeness crab sandwiches, blackened salmon sandwiches, prime rib nachos, beef and lamb gyros, Cucina Fresca pasta bowls and a full selection of vegetarian and vegan fare like Garden burgers and veggie dogs.
