I’ve fallen in love with Montana. I drove through this state in December, spending time in Missoula and Bozeman. Missoula was a welcome respite, chock full of unique stores like the tea/knick-knack/sandwich shop Butterfly Herbs and Liquid Planet, a coffee joint that rivals the best in Seattle. But my heart found a home in Bozeman. With a population of 36,000, this college town has a little bit of everything. For me personally, it seemed to have it all. It has access to outdoors, a thriving nightlife, good restaurants, reasonable cost of living, and hot springs. 🙂 Here’s my “Where To” guide to Bozeman, Montana. A total hidden gem, and you should head there now to check it out for yourself.
Where to Eat Breakfast: Nova Cafe
In the heart of downtown on Main Street, Nova Cafe had me at hello. Hall and Oates were playing quietly in the background and fresh coffee was available while we waited shortly for an open table. They pride themselves on supporting local farmers and artists, receiving produce and meat from nearby farms and walls decorated with funky art pieces. (My favorite- The Mustache Egg). The turkey hash was heavenly, and next time I’ll be sure to go on Wednesday for their Wacky Waffle Wednesday .
Where to Play: Bridger Bowl
I was there for opening day, and granted it was -15, I still enjoyed seeing the terrain on the mountain. Albeit I could only last a few runs, Bridger Bowl was chock full of areas to explore both on and off piste. Next time, hopefully when frostbite isn’t a concern, I’ll get to spend some serious time checking out the more than 2,000 acres of skiable terrain available there.
Where To Shop: Girls Outdoors
If I was going to open a clothing store, it would be exactly like Girls Outdoors. For seven years this boutique has been a favorite among locals and tourists alike to peruse the latest clothing for fashionable active fashion wear. They have all of my favorite brands-Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, Lole, Moving Comfort and many more. I left with a Pistil hat to support the local business and keep my head warm (it was freezing!).
Where to Drink Whiskey: Copper Whiskey Bar and Grill
After a long day (or short because it was too cold!) of playing outdoors, I’m a big fan of warming up with some whiskey. Copper, (as it’s called for short) had an impressive list of spirits available, with a strong showing of Montana whiskey, some locally distilled. While I was so-so on the burger, the whiskey I drank, Roughstock Whiskey, was spot on. Copper is a warm and welcoming place to kick back, have a drink with friends, and relax.
Where to Two-Step: The Eagles Lodge
A visit to “the Eagle” is a must for anyone visiting who wants to get a taste of local culture. It is below a no frills bar-we’re talking cash only, florescent lighting and cheap beer. A world different than Copper, but just as special. At 9:30 the live music started and the dance floor filled right on up. Two-step and jitterbug were the dances of choice, and I was impressed with the full range of ages of participants. I get the feeling little has changed in the Eagle over the years. And if you ask me, that’s what makes it such a must-see.
