We travel, whether for business or leisure, to discover and learn new things. Of course we want to believe that everything will go as planned. The fact is, however, that there are risks that come with travel.
The good news is that we can insure ourselves against unpredictable issues by taking precautions (many of which are common sense) and by covering ourselves for those problems that do occasionally arise. You can cover yourself by finding a reasonable trip insurance policy.
I can think of many reasons to have travel insurance, but the reasons below are at the top of my list.

1) You become ill or injured before your trip and have to cancel at the last minute. A pre-departure plan is for those who may have to cancel before leaving home. This takes on added importance these days given that most airfares are non-refundable. Getting protection for trip cancellation ensures you will get reimbursed if you are unable to travel.
2) Your luggage is lost. Let’s face it — airlines sometimes mess up and your luggage doesn’t arrive at your destination. Sometimes it’s found and delivered and sometimes not. Nothing’s worse than having to replace your items when you’re on the road so consider getting insurance to cover your lost or damaged luggage and its contents. Note that this policy may also include cancellation insurance.
3) You’re traveling with the family on a cruise or tour. You may have confidence that you’ll be OK during your travels but what about your family? Enjoy a sense of security on a tour or cruise to ensure that you’re protected in case of medical emergencies. You can then focus on enjoying the trip together instead of worrying about the “what if’s.”
4) Perfect for families traveling abroad. Traveling to another country? You’ll need a plan that covers you and the family in another country. This type of plan will be a bit more comprehensive than a plan covering you on a cruise or tour.
*****
The cost of travel insurance is usually just a small fraction of the cost of your entire trip, yet it is well worth it if something does happen to you or a family member. If nothing happens, fantastic. But the sense of security in knowing you are covered during your travels is priceless.
Important note: Before purchasing any policy, make sure you review exactly what is covered because every policy is different.
