It’s supposed to hit 100 degrees today in Seattle. Seriously. ONE HUNDRED. I think it’s a record. Naturally, I’m all about summer thinking right now. And, although we are surrounded by water, we’ve only got a couple of beaches and while people do swim in the water, it’s not like a Cali or Mexico beach where you can frolic.
Despite this drawback, it doesn’t keep me from enjoying both the heat and sun (please don’t start on how bad it is for me…). I was so psyched to come across a line of products, Smart Girls Who Surf, at the Outdoor Retailer show last week because these have been created specifically for us gals. I first have to say how unusual it is to even find a vendor at OR that specializes in women’s goods. The gals at the booth (exhibiting for the first time at OR) dubbed it the “beard and backpack” show because of the number of guys at this outdoor-related event. They were hanging tough, however, and having fun showing off their products.
So… their products.
Smart Girls Who Surf’s mission is to promote healthy skin care and their line of sun products are made from all natural ingredients that are both paraben and chemical free. In addition to sunblock (with an SPF 30+), they’ve got After Sun Soothing Lotion, Care for Hair Sun Protector (a moisturizing leave-in conditioner) and super yummy lip balms (cherry and vanilla flavors). They also offer soaps, beach blankets, hats and a few other items ideal for the beach (whether you’re a surfer or not).
I picked up some of their samples at the show and have already had a chance to use them given our weather here. And I do really like them. One thing that stands out to me is that environmentally friendly sun care products tend to be frangrance-free (which I can understand). But Smart Girls Who Surf products have just enough fragrance to make me feel like I’m AT the beach (even when I’m not) and just a little girly, too.
Their story doesn’t stop with these “cool” products. Not only is the company woman-owned, but they support a number of wonderful causes including: Boarding for Breast Cancer, Surfrider Foundation and the Laguna Beach Education Foundation.
You can purchase directly from their site and prices are comparable to their competition (lip balm $3.99, sun block $12.99).
