This week is a special time in Kolkata. It’s the festival known as Durga Puja and (depending on who you ask) includes 4 to 9 days of celebrations.
Durga Puja is the largest Hindu festival in the state of West Bengal and I had the chance to witness many of the pre-festivities leading up to the excitement just prior to departing for the Northeast state of Assam.
This included viewing a large replica of the Goddess Durga in the middle of the South City Mall (an upscale shopping center) in Kolkata. In addition to this large sculpture, the mall was filled with finely dressed families and lots of loud music. All the makings of a fantastic festival!
