This St. Patrick’s Day, visit Ireland without ever leaving your home. And just to make it a little more interesting, bring along a small refrigerator. That’s right. I said it. A fridge. I just finished reading Tony Hawks’ Round Ireland with a Fridge and absolutely loved it and I think you will too.
As many of you already know, I joined WanderLit on the Around the World in 52 Books challenge. The goal is to read a book a week, each from a different country, for the whole year of 2013. As St. Patrick’s Day was approaching, I thought I had better get to my selection for Ireland so I could let you all know about it in time for you to enjoy your own trip around the Emerald Isle without ever leaving your couch. I found Round Ireland with a Fridge to be a quick, fun read.
During a night of excessive drinking with friends, British comedian Tony Hawks was issued a challenge too irresistible to refuse. To win the bet, all he needed to do was hitchhike around the circumference of Ireland, with a fridge in tow, in under a month. Tony meets his escort for the trip in Dublin and the dorm sized fridge is eventually christened Saiorse Molloy. SaiorseĀ means freedom in Gaelic and satisfied the need for a unisex name. Instead of being scared off by a hitchhiker with a fridge, the country of Ireland embraces the duo and ushers them from Dublin and back.
Explore Ireland with Tony and Saiorse as they meet amazing and unusual people, often in pubs. One town makes the challenge a matter of national importance and tries to convince the Ministry of Defense that getting an Air Corps helicopter to take the pair out to Tory Island is the only way to fulfill one of the requirements. In another town, they take the fridge surfing and still others want to take the fridge diving. Saiorse also is the star at a Bachelors Festival. You will also benefit from Tony’s experiences and learn how to expertly hitchhike around Ireland (with a fridge) should you ever need to.
Does this sound like a book you would enjoy reading? Get your order in on Amazon today and you too, can be exploring Ireland with a Fridge this St. Patrick’s Day. At the end of each month, I summarize all my readings to give you the scoop on other international books you may enjoy. In case you missed them, please check out the January and February installments.
Or maybe you are really inspired and want to get yourself your own fridge and give this a try. May I suggest this model. It is compact and white just like Saiorse and would be a fine addition to any hitchhiking adventure. The color is key so you will be able to collect the autographs of everyone you meet and who gives you a ride, just like Tony.
Have you ever hitchhiked around another country? What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever seen someone hitchhiking with?
