Love apps and craft beer? With the rise of both industries, it’s no surprise they are joining forces. If you’re a beeroissuer (beer connoisseur), from beer games to best craft bars, here are my picks of the best seven cool beer apps:
Happy Houred
With Happy Houred and an iPhone, you can find all the beer, liquor and wine specials in your immediate vicinity within seconds of walking out the front door – for free. Now that’s something to celebrate! FYI, this app works best in big cities. For example, if you live in my hometown of 5,000 people in Aztec, NM, don’t bother downloading it. Nothing will show up.
Beer Universe
The Beer Universe app is your passport to 3,000 beer profiles and ratings. Rate beers yourself based on aroma, appearance, flavor and palate and Beer Universe recommends pours that will please your palate. It syncs with the Beer Universe website, so the recommendations delivered to your iPhone or Droid are updated faster than you can order another round.
Pintley
A beer website and app that gives stellar beer recommends based on your preferences. Unlike other beer sites, Pintley doesn’t just know beer; it also knows you. Pintley learns from your ratings and tasting notes to understand exactly what pleases your palate the most, so you can be your own beer expert. Cost: Free, avail for i-Phone or Android.
Beer Mapper
Similar to Pintley, Beer Mapper, a soon-to-launch mobile app, identifies a user’s beer preferences. By comparing beers against one another and weighing the value of variables such as style, flavor, texture and emotion, among others, the app continues to learn about a user’s taste and modify its results. In the meantime, check out Find Craft Beer app ($1.99) which uses BeerMapping.com’s data.
BeerCloud Did you or a friend you had in college spend way too much time majoring in the degree of ‘brew-ha-ha’. Well, Beer Cloud is just like that – the sommelier of brews. Beer Cloud specializes in pairing food with beers, locates great craft beers and provides a wee bit of history about each brew and brewery. Avail on iPhone or Droid for free.
Beer Hunt
Got a competitive streak? You’re gonna love Beer Hunt. The app enables users to “check in” for every beer consumed and tallies a “Total Craft Score” that awards points based on the number of beers consumed and the style and rarity of the beer. The app also features a “drink-o-graphic,” which stores and presents a user’s beer-drinking history. Good feature as after the 3rd or 6th beer, the names of beers become a bit fuzzy. Cost: Free
Craft Beer
The Craft Beer App helps you locate your favorite craft beers in your city. It also has an enormous database of craft beer (from all 50 states), beer podcasts, beer videos, beer descriptions, reviews, ratings and food pairing recommendations. Cost: $.99
Drink Well,
