My husband and I visited Montréal for the first time in late October 2014. We rented a flat in Petite Italie and our host insisted on making a dinner reservation for us at Hôtel Herman. It was for Sunday evening, which is a popular day for restaurants to take the night off. She called and was thrilled to find they were open on Sunday, until midnight!
She picked up on our love of good food experiences as she was showing us around her beautiful home. She thought it would be perfect for us. I was a bit worried about our limited diets (pescatarian, non-dairy), but they had no problem coming up with delightful, satisfying dishes.
If you see razor clams on the menu, GET THEM. I was so excited, I ate them before I thought about taking a photo. Everything was delicious and well balanced. It was definitely one of the best meals we had in Montréal. The menu changes daily to showcase in-season and local ingredients.
The wine selection was superb and we were lucky enough to try a Cabernet Franc that was only available in magnum size. Occasionally they will open one at the bar. This makes sitting at the bar the best option for wine lovers.
There’s a turntable just inside the door where you check in with the maître d’. Listening to vinyl all night was a very nice touch. I wish I knew what records they were playing. All I can remember is Bob Dylan. Everything they played supported the chill vibe.
Sit at the bar! It’s where the action is and the bar stools are comfortable, as well as beautiful. Bonus: they swivel.
I am so thankful to our host for sharing this favorite place of hers with us. It was very memorable and we hope to dine there again someday. Rumor is they are actually creating a hotel above the restaurant. This may only be a dream, but I hope it’s true!
May your journey be your muse,
Rachel
