This. Is. A Puka Dog.
Truth be told, I wasn’t impressed.
The guidebooks will all tell you that you must try a Puka Dog while in Kauai. And perhaps it’s true that you should at least try it. But I wouldn’t do it again.
Basically, it’s a veggie hot dog (above) or Polish sausage wrapped in a very doughy bun/piece of bread. You’ve got your choice of 4 Garlic Lemon Secret Sauces including Mild Original (my choice), Spicy Jalapeno, Hot Chili Pepper or Hot Hot Habanero. You then choose a tropical relish: mango, pineapple, papaya, coconut, banana or star fruit. Yellow Dijon mustard is optional (but recommended). And you get dog that looks like this…
This is all quite tasty. Don’t get me wrong. But there’s waaaaay too much bread getting in the way of my protein.
We ended up eating just half of the bread and pulling the dog out and chomping on that separately.
Given Kauai prices, it was cheap – about $13 for 2 of these (a pittance of the price of most dinners on the island). It’s a good story. I hope a good blog post. But I don’t have a frequent visitor card 🙂
