For the final travel post in my “Best of 2011” series, I’m sharing my favorite personal travel photo of the past year.
A few moments before the shot was taken on the island of Santa Cruz, this giant tortoise had been munching away on a few apples nearby. As it raised its head, the tortoise extended its leathery neck toward fellow visitor, 10-year-old Jesse. The curiosity of the tortoise toward its human visitor and Jesse’s surprise to be the object of that curiosity captures the wonder of my Galapagos Islands adventure.
What was one of your most memorable travels moments in 2011, Wanderboomers?
Leaving the train station and rounding the corner when my eyes first caught site of the Duomo in Florence, Italy. We spent two weeks surrounded by ancient art, delectable food and wine; and bicycled the green rolling hills of Tuscany. Truly the gem of Europe.
It’s a tie between the Eiffel Tower and Stonehenge
Tuscany is high on my travel list, Monica. What a dream trip! Thanks for stopping by ~
We should all have such dilemmas about choosing our favorite annual travel photo! Eiffel Tower . . . Stonehenge . . . Eiffel Tower . . . Stonehenge . . . The again, why choose? I’m happy that you enjoyed both in 2011, Marcia ~
In Africa, we had the might gorillas
Last July, I went to Italy for my honeymoon, and I can’t pick just one favorite moment–three come to mind. First, I did not expect the Forum to be so extensive. It was like one of those half-drawn pictures that a child is supposed to finish drawing. I could see easily picture ancient Rome from the ruins. Second, when I turned the corner in Museo de la Academia and saw Michelangelo’s David, I was taken aback by the sheer size of the statue, and then, upon examination, its flawlessne ss. Last, watching the sunrise over Tuscany while reading a book felt pure to me.
That would be an amazing sight, Krystal. Africa has to much to offer the adventurer! Thanks for stopping by ~
All lovely sights to feed my imagination, Janine! Thanks for sharing your favorite images from 2011 with us here ~
Oh my goodness, this photo is precious! I’ve always wanted to go to the Galapagos Islands! Why? To see the turtles, of course! 🙂 The expression on Jesse’s face is priceless! 🙂
Thanks, Bella! Our nature guide hastened to assure Jesse that the tortoise was simply curious, not hungry :-). I hope you get to the Galapagos Islands, too. You would love the trip ~
Nancy,
