Cities change, restaurants come and go. But the news today that Seattle’s Copper Gate is closing is one of the more disappointing closures I’ve heard about in a while (as a Norwegian-American, I have a soft spot in my heart for the bar). Located in Ballard, a neighborhood with a rich Scandinavian history, the Copper Gate opened in 1946 and has been serving great Scandinavian food since it switched ownership and underwent a refurbishment (and reputation booster) seven years ago. Seattle’s Scandinavian heritage has been fading in recent years as businesses have closed, and this latest closure comes as a surprise. You have until the end of the month to head over to the Copper Gate and order some gravlax and an aquavit to say skål to the old Ballard favorite.
