Jon and I made our way down to Cannon Beach recently for a (mostly) unplugged weekend getaway. I left my laptop at home (a major feat for me) and relied on books, games and cups of tea to keep me entertained.
Though we’re not exactly strangers to the area, this was the first time we stayed at The Ocean Lodge, located just south of downtown. It’s definitely walkable to all the galleries, cafes and shops located on Hemlock (CB’s main street) but just far enough away that you can easily feel removed from civilization.
In full disclosure, I’ll tell you that the folks at The Ocean Lodge hosted us for 2 nights. My original idea was to write a full-encompassing post about Cannon Beach that someone in the Northwest could utilize as a weekend getaway. But, after spending the weekend at the Lodge, I realized it’s worthy of an entire post because this IS a place you’ll never regret visiting (and a full one-tank trip is coming soon).
With the exception of staying with friends and family (I don’t want to hurt feelings, after all), I can say that this was the homey-est place I’ve ever overnighted on the Oregon Coast. The employees treated us (and every guest) like we were truly house guests. A bottomless jar of cookies is available around the clock. As is coffee, tea and fruit. Breakfast is served in the dining area, just off the library (pictured left) and includes way more pastries, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt and fruit than could possibly be consumed by all the guests. The pastries remain available throughout the day until they are all eaten up.
Our room had a gas fireplace (it didn’t throw off much heat but it was a nice romantic touch) and a jetted tub. We had a corner room with a partial view of the ocean as well as some of the smaller sea stacks that Cannon Beach is so famous for.
The main building (there are also separate lodges available) is appointed with light wood and throughout the hallways and library, books of all kinds are available to guests. There are games and small tables for kids and they have pet-friendly rooms (and even a bottomless jar of doggie biscuits) – so everyone is comfortable!
Whether you’re looking for a solo roadtrip destination or a romantic getaway, consider an off-season trip to Cannon Beach. In my humble opinion, visiting this coastal retreat during the winter, spring or fall are all perfect times to be there. While summers are beautiful (though they can be prone to rain and fog), you’ll miss the crowds and the higher rates if you choose an off season weekend or week.

Make reservations well in advance, especially during the summer and on holiday weekends. Other times it will be hit or miss. You’d do well to plan in advance and make this a top choice for your accommodations.
