Snow season is so close now, I can almost smell it. Skiers are probably some of the few people to get excited about the first signs of winter:
Frost on car windshield = happy face
Seeing your breath = victory dance
First snow = awkward/somewhat muddy snow angels
It only makes sense to start preparing by pulling out all the cozy gear. In true gypsy form, I love wearing items that fill many roles. Any gear that can bridge multiple seasons and activities is a winner in my books. Here are a few of my must haves for going from Fall to Winter:
Bean Boots
L.L.Bean sure nows how to “New England” right. There are few things more quintessential to the area than these babies. Not only are they super hot and in demand right now (you can blame trendy college kids for that one), they happen to be the most functional fall to winter boot. I personally have the unlined version which allows me to layer appropriately for the day. For those wet, mucky fall days, they keep you warm and dry. Add a thick sock and these will see you through to Spring. Sadly, due to popularity, they sell-out extremely fast every year; I bought mine in July to make sure I got a pair. In fact, According to this article, Bean Boots are currently out-of-stock. Your best bet will be to stalk the L.L.Bean outlet locations.
Warm Socks
Nothing goes better with those Bean Boots than cozy socks. Natural fibers are always the way to go. Though wool does great with the warmth factor, itchy skin can be a concern. A merino blend is the ideal solution. I love the Casual selection from Smartwool. The Traditional Snowflake Socks are both warm and soft. Check-out my ode to Smartwool socks in this post.
A Sweet Headband
I’m not talking about the kind that is only appropriate for retro ski parties, but rather the more modern take. My pick comes from a company rooted in Burlington, Vermont: Skida. The Nordic Headband comes in fabrics that are not only well-suited to active ladies, but also offer the most refreshingly original prints. The lightweight, wide band also fits nicely under a helmet. Fun and functional.
Down Vest
Ah, just like wearing a hug! A down-filled vest will keep warm and cozy with its pillowy goodness. The right one will also serve as a great mid-layer for skiing. Check-out the Down Sweater Vest from Patagonia. It comes in great colors and guarantees traceable down: ethically sourced down according to Patagonia.
