You can tell winter is right around the bend as temperatures drop and leaves come swirling down. You know what else is right around the corner? One of my favourite holidays, that magical day you get to wear whatever you want: Halloween. Why, yes, I do make a stunning Care Bear, thanks (read as: I just wore my favorite onesie out in public, mostly because of it’s coziness).
Trying to come up with a spooky ski related topic proved to be quite challenging until I happened upon an abandoned ski resort in Marlboro (VT). Sadly, the 1970s saw the ski industry in Vermont slowly decline, with smaller family mountains falling off the map. Hogback Ski Area was one of those, operating from 1946 only to finally close its doors in 1986. Now owned by the town in which it stands, the resort is open to the public for other recreational activities. Many of its buildings still stand and on an ominous grey day make for some pretty spooky surroundings.
I gingerly walked around the decrepit remains of one of the buildings, discovering all sorts of creepiness left behind: perfectly laid out skis and boots, safety pamphlets straight out of the 80s and a whole lot of dust. It felt as though the place had been left with hopes of one day reopening, with equipment left waiting and a rusty old chairlift that still stands.
